The Digestive System:

The Digestive System is an important thing we need to help us survive and live. Most organisms have a digestive system to help them get rid of nasty waste.
• The Digestive System has many parts such as: The mouth, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestine, pancreas, anus, and more.
How does the Digestive System look? It looks something like this:

In the Digestive System, the food first enters the mouth, then it travels down in the esophagus into the stomach. After that it travels in your small intestines to the large intestines where it goes down and leaves from the anus.
Pathway of the Digestive System:

Breakdown and Absorption:
Mechanical Breakdown:
Chemical Breakdown:
• The food is physically broken down
• Happens in the mouth, teeth, and stomach.
• When done, the food is left in tiny pieces after a breakdown.
• Food is broken down with chemical substances such as saliva.
• Happens when enzymes are present.
• When done, the food is broken down into the monomers.
In our body, it goes through processes called breakdown and absorption. Breakdown breaks down food so our body can use it. Absorption uses food, takes the nutrients out and gives it to the blood.
Breakdown happens in the mouth, stomach, esophagus, and small intestine. Absorption happens in the small intestines, etc.
The Mouth

Some Parts of the Mouth:
- Teeth
- Gums
- Lips
- Saliva
Functions of the Mouth:
- Breakdown food
- Used to eat/drink
The Esophagus

Some Parts of The Esophagus:
- Cervical Parts
- Thoracic Parts
- Abdominal Parts
-Throat
Functions of The Esophagus:
- Takes food from your mouth and takes it to your Stomach
The Stomach

Some Parts of the Stomach:
- Fundus
- Cardia
- Pyric Sphincter
- Greater and Lesser Curvature
Function of the Stomach:
- Stores food for a certain amount of time
- Breaks down the food for digestion
- digests food
The Small Intestines

Some Parts of the Small Intestines:
- Duodenum
- Jejunum
- Ileum
Functions of the Small Intestines:
- helps further digest the food that comes from the stomach
