Vocabulary
Expansion: When an object gets bigger from being
heated
Contraction: When an object gets smaller from being
cooled
Thermal Energy: Energy an object gets from heat
Kinetic Energy: Energy of a moving object
Particles: Everything is made up of tiny particles too
small for the naked eye to see, air particles are
constantly moving and bouncing off of everything.

The Heating and Cooling of Solids
When a solid is heated it expands, or gets bigger.
The particles start to move faster and get farther
apart.
When a solid is cooled it contracts, or gets smaller.
The particles start to move slower and get closer
together.

The Heating and Cooling of Liquids
When a liquid is heated it expands, which means
the level of the liquid in it's container will rise.
The particles move faster and get farther apart.
When a liquid is cooled it contracts, which means
the level of the liquid in it's container will sink.
The particles move slower and get closer together.

The Heating and Cooling of Gas
When a gas is heated it expands, meaning the object
gets bigger. The particles start to move faster and get
farther apart.
When a gas is cooled it contracts, meaning its gets
smaller. The particles start to slow down, and come
closer together, although gas particles never touch.
