This is the tale of the water
cycle in action. The water
cycle is the movement of
water as it travels around
and through the earth. The
cycle begins with
evaporation. Evaporation
is the change of water
from liquid to invisible gas.
Heat from the sun
evaporates the water. This
water changes into
invisible gas that floats up
into the sky and turns into
clouds.

Once these clouds can't hold any more water, they
release it as precipitation. Precipitation is rain, hail,
sleet, and snow that falls from the sky. The snow
falls onto mountains and becomes squished
together after a very long time. This snow turns into
a glacier. Glaciers are giant structures of ice.

The snow and ice on
top of a glacier
changes directly to
invisible gas from the
heat of the sun. This is
called sublimation.

When it rains, the
water travels down the
mountains and into
lakes, rivers, and
oceans.

When rain falls onto
the ground, it sinks
into the ground and
collects salt and really
tiny solids called
minerals. This is called
percolation.

When the rain sinks into the ground, it becomes
groundwater. This water can collect and turn into
aquifers. Aquifers are large pools of water
underground. The salts and minerals the
groundwater carries floats around in aquifers.
Right below the aquifers is the impermeable layer.
The impermeable layer is a layer of earth that water
can not go into.

Some of this groundwater also travels into bodies
of water such as lakes.

And then the cycle starts over again!
