In a far away land and universe, all the legends and stories that we thought were wrong, are actually real. In this land, everything is possible. Dragons are real, fairies would come out during the day, unicorns with their beautiful horns, and mermaids with their very real tails. A very important change, even more important than these creatures, is that humans...aren't real. Of course there are part-human part-fairies, part human-part horses, and more but there aren't any full-blooded humans.

Alex is a human who doesn’t know much about her parents. She’s lived alone her whole life but she still finds happiness with the animals there. She’s scared of what the other magical creatures would think of her. That’s why she’s too scared to set out from her place in the forest.
What Alex doesn’t know is that another human lives in this world too! His name is Rowan and he is charming but can be a brat and brags a lot about himself. What's interesting is that he’s half-human. His mother was a fairy and his father was a human. How did this manage to happen? Nobody knows but that’s why everyone loves him. His mother was a fairy queen and his father a knight from a kingdom that went extinct, along with the other humans.
Rowan, being the only-half human, is tired of seeing these magical creatures. His whole life has been awesome and unusual…but he wants to be normal, kind of. Rowan just wants another human to be his friend, which makes him sad. Rowan is becoming more and more mean because he’s bored and sad. The fairies make Rowan cast a spell so that invitations to the Winter Party would fall from the sky. The fairies used what the strange humans taught them long ago. They called it Christianity. It was their old belief. One of their beliefs was to love those you hate (“What did Jesus Say When He Instructed Us to Love Our Enemies?”). The fairies hoped that this party would make Rowan be kind and gentle.
Meanwhile in the forests, Alex is eating some berries when something falls from the sky. It’s one of the invitations Rowan sent out! Alex reads the invitation and immediately throws it away. Alex has heard plenty of stories about Rowan and his bratty attitude. Alex hates Rowan. She hates that Rowan got all the cool and better stuff while Alex gets nothing. At the same time…Alex really wants to dress up and pretend to be a princess.
Alex ends up going to the Winter Party with her icy blue dress. The second she steps in the party, everybody stops what they’re doing to stare at her. They whisper asking how a full-blooded human can even exist. Alex is afraid because this is the first time she’s close to all these new creatures. Then, Alex spots Rowan. Her enemy. The person she’s jealous of.
As Alex stands at the entrance, she’s terrified of what the fairies and everyone else think of her. She’s scared they’re going to laugh at her because she doesn’t have powers. She stays at the entrance of the palace and is saved when a voice speaks to her, “Stay calm and do nothing.”To do nothing and to go with the flow of things is called Wu Wei from Taoism (“Wu-Wei - New World Encyclopedia”). Walking calmly with nothing to worry about, (“Wu-Wei - New World Encyclopedia”), Alex walks to Rowan.
Alex and Rowan try to talk to each other. They’re both in shock of finding each other and they’re really quiet.
Later on, Alex gets angry because Rowan is being rude and she starts to argue with him. Alex tells Rowan about all the bad things she’s heard about him, “You are so rude! You brag a lot! You are mean for no re—” Alex is cut off by the sound of the door opening, really loud.
The Evil Witch is at the entrance of the palace. She looks angry. Alex starts to laugh because she finds it funny that the Evil Witch was technically invited to the Winter Party since Rowan did cast a spell so that everyone would get an invitation to the Winter Party. The Evil Witch points at Rowan and Alex…oh no…she’s cast a spell. Before anyone can do anything, the Evil Witch begins her spell!
When Alex and Rowan wake up, the Evil Witch is there to tell them that she put a spell on them. Alex and Rowan can’t be far away from each other or else…something bad happens. She tells them that the spell can only be broken when they travel, together, to her tower on the highest mountain, Olympus, in two days. Alex and Rowan start to get mad at each other and blame each other for their problem. Little do they know that the Evil Witch had more tricks up her sleeve.
Alex and Rowan can’t stand each other anymore. They fight for almost everything and it doesn’t help that they’re stuck together. On their adventure to the Evil Witch’s tower, a lot of things start to slow them down. First, they’re getting almost no sleep which makes them walk slower and slower. Sometimes, the tribe of half-humans, half-horses, called Centaurs, would follow them and try to separate them which isn’t a good thing. One day they’ve had enough and they end up finding a cave to sleep in.
The cave is amazing with its stories written on the walls. Alex remembers these stories…a Centaur told her about it. Alex starts to get scared because the cave that they’re going to sleep in belongs to a Centaur! Alex’s fear worries Rowan and he tries to take care of her. Even though they’re enemies, Rowan thinks that she still deserves to be treated nicely (Steindl-Rast). The old humans believed in something called Christianity. In Christianity, one of the important lessons taught is to always love your enemies (“What Did Jesus Mean When He Instructed Us to Love Our Enemies?”). The lessons they taught was to treat your enemies nicely, don’t be so mean to them, and to take it easy on them because you don’t know what may be happening (Steindl-Rast, David).
