Introduction
In history class, we are learning about different forms of
government. The chart we are using is called the political spectrum, a list
of all the different types of government. It includes anarchy, democracy,
communism, one party state, theocracy, monarchy, military, dictatorship,
and fascism. As you move from left to right on the chart, fewer and fewer
people are making decisions. In our story, each girl lives in a different type
of government in her family. We start at fascism and move left along the
spectrum. We end with Kate, whose family governs themselves with
anarchy. Our story shows that all forms of government are unique, and
that one form does not necessarily work better than another. Some may
be more successful in the length of time that they have existed, and some
may be less successful in the lack of stability in the government. Each type
of government has good and bad qualities, but there is not one that is
clearly the best.

at her birthday party. She was
so excited for it to start.

Kate had invited Lisa, Sara, Alexis, Madison,
Kayla, Claire, Sophie, and Jenny to her party.

"We should jump on the bed!" said Kate.

Lisa, Sara, Alexis, Madison, and Kayla got on the bed
with Kate, but the other girls wouldn't. Kate asked the
other girls why they didn't want to jump.

Jenny said, "My
family does not
approve of
jumping on the
bed. My mom
makes all the
decisions for me
and it makes our
family great. It is
the best and only
option. I could not
imagine it any
other way."

Sophie said,"I don't
want to because my
parents say that I'm
not allowed to.
When they tell me
not to do something,
I don't do it. They
said that jumping on
a bed is wrong and I
will do what they say
because if I don't, I
will get in trouble."

Claire said, "My dad
is a police officer.
He has more power
over my family than
my mom does. He
would not like it if
he saw me jumping
on a bed. I would
probably get in
trouble."

"Dinner is ready!" Kate's mom said. The girls
jumped off the bed and ran to the kitchen to
eat their pizza.

After they ate their pizza, most of the girls ran
away to play once more, while Kayla picked up her
plate, taking it to be cleaned. The other girls asked
her why.

Kayla said, "I
always take up my
plate. My
grandfather is the
head of my family
and eventually my
dad and brother
will be too. He
tells me to take
my plate to be
washed, so I do."

As all the girls ran to the bedroom and started to get
ready for bed, Madison began to pray. When the
other girls saw her, they asked,"Madison, what are
you doing?"

Madison replied, "I
am praying. My mom
and dad do this every
night and I do too.
When people pray it
makes good things
happen. That is how
they run my whole
house and it works
very well."

Alexis, Lisa, and Sara were tired, but the other girls were
wide awake. They wanted to stay up. Kate asked the girls
on the bed why they wanted to go to sleep.

Alexis said,"My
parents are
divorced. I live with
my mom and she
says that I can
decide who makes
the decisions, but
she is the only
option. She told me
to go to bed at nine
tonight, so I think
that I should."
