The earth is the planet where we live.
It is very special and different from all the
other planets in our solar system because it
has water and air. People, plants and
animals need water and air to survive.
The earth is the third planet from the sun.

orbits our earth and it takes about
28 days for the moon to travel around
our earth.
The moon looks different to us during
each month, because as it orbits the
earth, its position from the sun
changes.
We see the moon in the sky because
the sun's light reflects on its surface.

In this picture, we can clearly see the sun's
reflected light at the bottom.
Each month, the moon goes through different
phases and this particular phase is called "The
Crescent Moon."
The moon does not create its own light. The
light we see is the sun's reflected light.

This is a picture of the moon from space with
our earth in the background.
In this picture, we can see the moon's surface.
Its surface is covered with craters. These
craters were caused by meteors that crashed
into its surface over millions of years.
Some craters are very large and deep and
most of them are circular.

Apollo 11 was the first lunar space flight that
landed humans on the moon. Lunar is another
word for "moon."
Apollo 11 had three astronauts: Neil
Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, and Michael
Collins.
They launched from Florida in the United
States on July 16th, 1969 and landed on the
moon in a place called "Sea of Tranquility" on
July 20th, 1969.

An astronaut must wear special protective
gear.
The astronauts of Apollo 11 wore space suits,
special protective helmets, boots and gloves
which were locked in place. They also had
their own oxygen tanks, because the moon has
no air.
