What is the Great Barrier Reef?

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the most unique ecosystems in the world. It is many living breathing plants that is the home to many different species of animals.
There are so many different types of coral in the reef, that scientists are still finding new species today. There are 3,000 different species of individual coral branches in the reef.
The reef itself is over 1429 miles long, and stretches along the northeastern coast of Australia.

Getting to the Reef
There are multiple entry points to access the reef, however the first step is getting to Australia! Flying to Australia (depending on where you are coming from) can take quite a while. It can take anywhere from 22 hours (East coast of the US) and 14 hours (West coast of the US). Once in Australia, you will want to make your way to Cairns- which is considered the "gateway to the reef."

Great News! You have made it Australia and are now in Cairns. Next, you should find a eco-responsible tour company that has experience in protecting the reef. The reef is a precious ecosystem and while it it amazing to experience, we still need to preserve it.
Also, it order to truly experience the reef up close, you need to dive down into the water. The best times to dive are between June and October. Don't worry, your tour guide will prepare you!

Wildlife in the Reef
There are so many different species of plants and animals that call the Great Barrier Reef home. Some you may be familiar with like sharks, sea turtles, and clown fish (thanks Finding Nemo!)
