the legend of the Matariki

The legend of Matariki starts with Papatuanuku and Ranginui were getting divided over whether to separate them and bring light and life to the earth. Eventually, Tane Mahuta, the god of the forest, laid on his back and used his feet to force them apart.

But Tawhirimatea, the god of the winds, did not agree with his brother's actions. He thought that separating his parents was cruel. He was so angry he tore out his own eyes and threw them into the sky this became the stars of Matariki

There are 7 stars but some people celebrate 9.

the stars are Tupu-ā-nuku, Tupu-ā-rangi, Waipunarangi, Waitī, Waitā,Ururangi and Matariki

Matariki is the leader/mother of all the stars.

she means reflection,hope. she also means health of people.

Waiti is connected to the fresh water.to things in rivers/lakes/streams like eels and fish eg

Waita is connected to salt water,things in the ocean like cray fish,crabs,fish,and pippis eg.
