James I was the Kind of Scotland and England. He was recieved by the English people poorly because of this. They considered him an outsider. James I believed in divine right but was unable to execute it. When he died, his son Charles I took over. Charles also believed in an absolutist government.










King Charles felt that the Parliament was trying to limit his powers so he dismissed them indefinately.





















































For 11 year Charles did not call parliament

During these 11 years, Charles hoped to unify England under a common religion.



The Scottish weren't happy with this new prayer book, so they attacked.

Charles called back the parliament because he needed tax money for a proper army to fight the Scottish people.
The parliament wasn't very happy with King Charles I and he tried to charge anyone who disagreed with him of treason. Parliament accused him of treason and war broke out.














The Roundheads fought for limited rights of the king and the Cavaliers fought for full power of the king. After 9 years of fighting the Roundheads won and King Charles I was killed.




































For five years, Oliver Cromwell, a former parliamentarian, was crowned Lord Protector of the Throne and he ruled as a military dictator, being known for his strict Puritan rules and brutal reaction to the Irish uprising.

































After the death of Cromwell, Charles II was asked by parliament to come back to the throne in an act called "The Restoration". He was a Catholic sympathizer who had many illegitimate children and parties.
