Hi kids I am Tom and today I will be taking you through the digestive system!

The first important step of the digestive system is mechanical digestion. This is when you eat something and you chew it up so you are able to swallow the food so it can continue to travel through your body.

The second important step of the digestive system is chemical digestion. This is the process when your body uses water and digestive enzymes to break down the food before you swallow the food.

This happens in your small intestine.

Another important part in the digestion system in your mouth. This is because inside your mouth is salivary glands and they produce saliva that helps break down food.

Next up we have the epiglottis. The epiglottis is what stops your food and drinks from entering your windpipe. If the food enters your windpipe that is when you start to cough.

You ever hear your parents say something went down the wrong tube this is because the epiglottis did not do its job.
