When Costantine moved his capital from rome in the west, he
chose the ancient city of Byzantium in the East calling the
empire the Eastern Roman empire.

Constantinople was the capitol of the Roman,
Byzantium, Latin and the Ottoman empires. It was
named after Constantine the great. The city's previous
name was Byzantium. Its location was important because
it overlooked the Bosporus and Dardanelles. In order to
trade between the Mediterranean sea and the Black sea
you had to go through Constantinople.

Justinian wanted to regain the greatness of the Byzantine empire
and conquer the historical western land that had been lost. He
gained control of the empire by succeeding his uncles throne. His
goals were to simplify the Roman laws. So he created his own
laws and named it the "Justinian Code". Another one of his
ambitions was to reinforce some of the destroyed mile markers
of Constantinople. His soldiers built a massive stone wall that was 14
miles long. Its location is along the coastline of the western border.Justinian Code

Theodora was empress of the Roman Empire and wife of
Emperor Justinian I. Theodora was born in 500 A.D. She
was an entertainer, dancing on stage and providing
sexual services off stage. She eventually gave up that
life and became a wool spinner in a house near the
palace. That is where she would meet her future
husband Justinian I. Theodora would prove herself a
worthy and able leader during the Nika riots with a
speech she gave. She influenced the empire policies
regarding women, including divorce laws and property.
She had passed laws that prohibited forced prostitution
and closed brothels. Theodora died of cancer on June
28, 548 and her body was buried in the Church of the
Holy Apostles, one of the churches she and Justinian
had built in Constantinople

Cultural diffusion is when civilizations exchange
ideas and Russians adopted the Byzantine Empires
alphabet, religion, & architecture. The Russians
adopted Orthodox Christianity from the Byzantines
and Russian architecture was based on Byzantine
traditions.
