The history

The period of the Golden Horde

The town is conquered by the Golden Horde, which changes its name to New Town. The stone fortress dates from this period.

The period of the locality included in the Moldovan state

In the last quarter of the 14th century, the Tatars of the Golden Horde are expelled from Old Orhei. During the time of Stephen the Great, the stone fortress was repaired and transformed into the residence of Orhei

Period of decay

In the middle of the 16th century, the inhabitants of the city abandoned Old Orhei and moved 15 km to the northwest, founding Orhei on the current site of the city.

In Old Orhei there are many places you can visit, but today I will tell you about two. The first is

Pîrcălabu Bosie Monastery

Complex composed of a cave church and 9 monastic cells, located at a height of 25 m, dates from the 17th century after Christ. It stands out for the medieval lapidary inscriptions, written in Cyrillic script in the Slavonic and Romanian languages, unique of this kind, preserved in the Republic of Moldova.

The construction is attributed to Pârcălab by Orhei Bosie, who left a founding inscription at the entrance to the Church, in the distant year 1665.
