Thunderstorms are types of storms
that have lightning, thunder, and rain.
Lightning is a bright flash of light in
the sky. Be careful because lightning
can hurt you. Thunder is a loud noise
that happens right before the lightning
appears.
Thunderstorms can happen in the
spring and the summer, during the
afternoon and at night.

What causes thunderstorms?
1. Moisture, or wetness in the air
caused by water, makes clouds and
rain
2. Unstable air, or air that keeps
moving, needs to be warm and can rise
fast
3. Lift comes from fronts, sea
breezes, or mountains.

What should you do if you are outside in the storm?
Look for dark skies, strong wind, and lightning. Go inside as soon as
possible. Stay away from trees because the lightning may hit it.
Also, don't go swimming.
What should you do if you are
inside in the storm?
Avoid water. This means you
should not take a shower or wash
dishes. You should also avoid using
electronics like a computer. Stay
away from any windows.

Tornadoes are columns of air with fast and
strong winds, that rotate, or turn, in the sky. They
happen during a thunderstorm. They are so
strong, they can carry houses, cars, and trees.

in America.
How do tornadoes form?
They come from thunderstorms. They need
moist and warm air from Mexico, and cool
dry air from Canada.
When those two types of air meet,
they mix and the funnel of the
tornado is formed. A funnel cloud
is a column of air that does not
touch the ground. Once it touches
the ground, it is called a tornado.

Before: Have a plan. Know where to go. Prepare a kit
with emergency food, enough for 3 days.
During: Go to a basement or a room inside your house
with no windows on the lowest floor. Hide under a
strong piece of furniture.
At school: You should have a plan and practice drills. Go
to a basement or room without windows. Cover your
head with your arms.
After: Stay indoors until it is safe. Search your house
with a flashlight. Search for injured people, without
hurting yourself.
