wanted to explore the Earth.
"We have to start at the top!" exclaimed
Regan.
"Right, Earth's crust." Rachel smiled
proudly.
As they worked their way down through
the layer, Aubrey looked very confused.
"What's Earth's crust?"

oceans and about 25 miles thick under
the continents." Rachel said.
"It has a relatively low density!"
Regan smiled.
"It varies from air temperature on top to
about 1600 degrees Fahrenheit. The
pressure also increases with depth."
She added.

what the lithosphere was to her friends.
"The lithosphere is 100 km thick and made up of
dense iron and nickel. It's also 300-500 degrees
Celsius." Adam nodded in agreement.
"The deeper you go, the more dense the layer
becomes! Pressure varies greatly in this layer.
Looking ahead, Regan pointed out that they were
about to reach the bright, hot asthenosphere. She
reached into her bag and pulled out her sunglasses
then her friends did the same.

spite of its heat, pressures keep it plastic, and it
has a relatively low density. The asthenosphere
is 180 km thick and it's partially molten rock
with the consistency of tar. Asthenosphere
molten rock is made of iron-magnesium silicates."
Regan smiled proudly at her vast knowledge of
one of the lesser known layers of Earth.

mantle. The upper mantle is 500 to 900 °C and
the lower mantle is 4,000 °C. Also, the upper
mantle is 670 km while the lower mantle is
2,171 km." Adam said.
"Yeah, and pressure increases with depth for
both mantles. They also have low densities,
which are under 5 g/cm3." Rachel added.
