When Gracie gets home from school she always throws her tennis shoes in the
mud room, not thinking about what they have been through. At school Gracie
was assigned a research project about tennis shoes.

Gracie found out that her shoes have been through a lot over
that past years of change and improvement by, Charles Goodyear
since the late 18 hundreds.

She noticed that during the Greek athletic contests, runners competed barefoot then the Romans
approved their messengers to wear thin-soled shoes and it was very much needed.

In 1900, the first sneaker, or all-purpose athletic shoe,

was designed. Made primarily of canvas, this sneaker

featured a rubber rim made possible by Charles

Goodyear's ideas about rubber in 1839.

The process of making shoes was actually all

done by hand until the year 1833 so, there

was a lot of work involved in creating all the

different pairs of shoes you’d find in a store

at the time.

After Gracie found out about the different pairs of
tennis shoes she started discovering the materials.

The major materials used are kevlar, leather canvas, foam-blown polyurethane,
thermoplastic polyurethane, and kangaroo leather. These materials each have their own purpose.

Kevlar is used for the main part of the shoe

because it is ten times the strength of

leather. The leather canvas is used to form

the shoe because it is stable, thin and has a

low density. The foam-blown polyurethane

gives the shoe extra cushioning and makes it

more comfortable. The thermoplastic

polyurethane makes the shoe strong and

pliable. Polyurethane is a unique material

that offers elasticity, toughness, and

durability. Kangaroo leather is used to give an

extra spring to the athletes step and adds

elasticity.
