The Tacoma Bridge, built July 1, 1940, stood 

for four months and six days before it 

collapsed. It was not rebuilt for ten years, on 

October 14, 1950. When it was built, it was the 

third largest suspension bridge in the world.

The Tacoma bridge collapsed, because of the 

very windy region of Washington it was put in. 

This wind caused the bridge to vibrate at its 

resonant frequency. 

Resonant Frequency is the natural frequency of 

vibration determined by the physical 

parameters of the vibrating object. The bridge 

broke because of the force of the wind on the 

side of the beam that supported the road.
