I am the Dengue Virus.   My name is

Denny V.  

Kids don't like me, but mosquitoes do!

I have been around for hundreds 

of years, but these days I am more 

popular than ever.

I move around by hitching a ride inside 

mosquitoes.   Aedes aegypti are my 

favorite.   They like to live in places that 

are hot, crowded, and rainy.

This is my mosquito, Gabby.

 Real Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are black 

and white.   

The other day I heard Gabby and her 

friends talking.   They are planning to take 

over a village and a city! 

Gabby is a fearless mosquito! 

This is how we met....

I was living in human blood.

I made some copies of myself.

Viruses can do that!!!

Then Gabby came and bit the human.

I moved to Gabby in the blood she drank.

The copies I made stayed put for about 

another week, then they fizzled out and 

died.

 Now I live in Gabby.

I keep making more of myself so that 

each time Gabby bites someone we can 

spread the dengue virus to them.

If mosquitoes take over,

 I can spread around like crazy!

  It is all part of the plan!

About one week after I spread into a human, they 

can start feeling sick.

Symptoms may include:

FEVER

HEADACHE

PAIN BEHIND THE EYES

BONE PAIN

STOMACH ACHE

VOMITING 

and RASH.

Many times people get a mild case of 

dengue, and they don't even feel sick.

There is no vaccination to prevent dengue 

and no medicine to treat it...

...but people who think they have dengue fever 

should go to the clinic.

On rare occasions, people do get very sick.  

Go to the hospital right away if you have...

bad stomach pain, lots of vomiting, bleeding 

from the nose or mouth, or if you feel restless 

or extremely tired.

People who have dengue fever must be protected 

from mosquitoes with bed nets....

...and they must NOT take aspirin.

Tylenol

Most of the time people get better in 

about one week.   Then they don't have 

the virus any more.

Gabby and her friends are working 

on their plans to take over!

They are sneaky mosquitoes who can

 live outside, and INSIDE.

Gabby and her friends love cities because

 there is a lot of human blood to drink.

After they drink, they lay eggs.   They only

 need a teaspoon of clean water to lay eggs.

Plastic and metal garbage are great places for 

Gabby and her friends to live and lay eggs.

They also love to lay eggs in large knots 

in trees, clogged gutters, and water bowls 

for pets.

Around houses, Gabby and her friends can 

live and lay eggs in kid's toys, flower pots, 

and water storage containers.
