The cold war was to dominate international
affairs for decades and many major crises
occurred.
*Weapons of mass destruction was the most
worrying case.
The Cuban Missile Crisis, Vietnam, Hungary
and the Berlin Wall were just some of the
affairs.

Dwight D. Eisenhower the 34th
president
of the United States was one of the
important
leaders of the Cold War.

Charles de Gaulle was a French
general, leader, and national
hero. He was also the architect
of the fifth republic.

The strategy of the cold war was that of containment
which involved threats of total annihilation through the
use of nuclear weapons.
Containment was a United States policy to prevent the
spread of communism abroad.
A component of the Cold War, this policy was a response
to a series of moves by the Soviet Union to enlarge
communist influence in Eastern Europe, China, Korea,
Africa, and Vietnam. It represented a middle-ground
position between appeasement and rollback.

Due to this ideological competition to win the
race, technological advancement sky rocketed
on both sides which eventually helped to
benefit every sphere of human lives
throughout the world.

The cold war was a success because it
prevented all-out scale nuclear war. The end of
the Cold War was accompanied by a large
growth in the number of liberal democracies.
In areas where the two superpowers had been
waging proxy wars, and subsidizing local
conflicts; many conflicts ended with the Cold
War; and the occurrence of interstate wars,
ethnic wars, revolutionary wars or refugees
and displaced persons crises declined sharply.

The cold war was a failure in terms of the original
problems because it was never solved. The economic
downfall of capitalism and illiteracy caused most
countries to switch from capitalism to communism.
Some countries were forced to follow the Soviet Union
by overwhelming power because it was either going to
war or following into their grip. Since they failed to
confront the emerging struggles of communism and the
Soviet Union, the Democratic party received countless
blows.

The Cold War was fought at a tremendous cost globally
over the course of more than four decades. It cost the
U.S. up to $8 trillion in military expenditures, and the
lives of nearly 100,000 Americans in Korea and
Vietnam. It cost the Soviets an even higher share of
their gross national product. In Southeast Asia, local
civil wars were intensified by superpower rivalry, leaving
millions dead. The Cold War caused major proliferation of
nuclear weapons among the US and USSR.

The Cold War became a dominant influence on
many aspects of American society for much of
the second half of the 20th century. It
escalated due to antagonist values between
the United States, representing capitalism and
democracy, and the Soviet Union, representing
communism and authoritarianism.

The Cold War was different from other wars
because it was as much of a propaganda war
as it was military engagement. Cultural battles
between the superpowers had as much, or
more, of an impact on the everyday lives of
most American civilians than any other aspect
of the Cold War.
