Heart of Atlanta vs. United States

“I say to you, quite frankly, that the time for racial discrimination is over.” - Jimmy Carter
It was the year 1964 when Chloe had a very long week. She wanted to relax, so she found a nice motel where she planned to kick back.
Chloe had arrived outside the Heart of Atlanta Motel around midnight.
It was after a tiring trip to visit family and she wanted to sleep tight.
She was ready for a good night's rest after a long day
so she sat down her bag as she planned to enjoy her stay.
But just moments after she walked through the front door and turned to approach the front desk,
she was suddenly stopped by a tall, Caucasian man in a crisp sharp vest.
His voice was filled with disgust as he spoke,
"This place is not meant for your type of folk."
He turned away Black people without delay, firm with his beliefs against African Americans and where they should stay.
He then kicked Chloe out of the motel, sending her away with her head held down as her tears slowly fell.
As she walked past the motel, she decided to look through a window to spare a glance,
only to see everyone in the motel having fun with song and dance.
As Chloe sat down at the bus stop watching the rain fall,
she wondered what she did to deserve this when she hadn't done anything at all.
This is how things were if you were Black. She knew that much to be true.
But even though her skin was dark, wasn't she a person too?
Chloe knew this was wrong. She knew the way she was being treated wasn't right,
but she couldn't do anything on her own, let alone put up a fight.
But as time passed and other African Americans continued to get treated the same way all around, they decided to fight back, lifting their voices
through the air as one harmonious sound.
With the increases in protest and a time for change, the Civil Rights Act was passed keeping true to its name.
Its purpose was to ban discrimination, no longer allowing it anywhere within the nation.
However, only two hours after the creation of the Act,
a voice of protest could be heard, from the Heart of Atlanta Motel to be exact.
It seems that even with the protests and all that was said, the employees couldn't get the idea of treating blacks as equals through their heads.
So, of course the news of the Act made the motel employees mad. With its power forcing them to comply, no they weren't glad.
"This is an outrage and we will continue to refuse, to let people of color come and go through our doors as they choose."
So the motel got the law involved to keep the African Americans away.
They went to court and let it be known that they did not want them in their motel, nor want to allow them the rights to stay.
With the case now presented to the justices of the Supreme Court, a decision was soon to be made.
Would the Court rule in favor of the motel or would they support the Act and allow a chance for racism to fade?
“By the law of the Constitution, 5th and 13th Amendment if you must,
it clearly states that this little Act cannot influence us!
By right we are allowed to choose who we want to host
and I'd rather it not be people who only know basic manners at most!”
As the motel's statement was loudly declared, the case's value continued to flare. Soon the court came to an unanimous decision, 9-0, the court ruled in favor of the Act, wanting to see the future's bright vision.
