Julian was born in Germany. He had a wonderful 

family and lived with his mom, dad, three brothers, 

and one sister. His family loved to do things 

together. 

They took vacations and celebrated holidays, birthday parties, 

anniversaries, weddings and other important events. But one of 

his favorite things to do was to go to his grandparent's house in 

Gluecksburg.

At his grandparents house he would play in the little 

forest next to their house with his siblings, although 

they had to be sure not to bother the wild hogs.

They also played near some old walls and stone 

graves that he and his siblings thought were ruins 

of an old castle. Julian had been told that was 

where knights and warriors had fought bravely for 

their kin and country. 

On some special days they would walk to the 

beach near the Baltic Sea and have ice cream 

and crepes. Julian loved the beach.

While growing up Julian learned about a terrible thing that 

happened in his country long before he was born. He heard 

about many different things that happened during that time, 

and how people mistreated each other because they weren't 

all exactly the same. He also learned about similar things 

that happened in other countries around the world. 

Then, Julian began to wonder where his grandparents 

were when this all happened. He wanted to know his 

family's place in that history. 

Soon Julian learned that his grandmother 

was very brave and spoke out against 

those terrible things that were happening.
