Hi, my name is Aiden! Today, I’ll take you through a day in my life in Mozambique.

This is my house. It is a straw hut. In this one-room hut we sleep, bathe, and cook.

First, when I wake up I greet my family and go to sweep around my hut & help out my mom with farming. In the morning I usually help mom cultivate cassava in our backyard. This is a staple in Mozambique, although it’s low in protein. 

Now I’m going to check on our farm animals like our goats and chickens to feed them some of the grains and maize we managed to harvest. We try our best to keep them healthy so that they don’t make us sick when we eat them.

When I’m outside I see a lot of dry land. There have been lots of floods and droughts in Mozambique. Over 15 natural disasters in the past 25 years! 

Because our land has lots of natural disasters like floods, droughts, and cyclones, and therefore can’t grow many crops, many people don’t have access to nutritious foods. 

Plus, the red locust plague destroys our land even further. Poor people suffer the most as they have less things to sell to make money, and they eat less food so when things get tough they don’t have many lifelines to stay afloat.  80% of my people can’t afford a good diet, and many families are low income.

People in my country eat about 2180 calories daily, which is 269 calories under the proper intake level. *36.8% of our people are undernourished*

Then, I use water from a bucket to brush my teeth and take a bath since we don’t have running water. I then put on some clothes and get ready for school.

I eat a small breakfast my mom cooked and then walk to school.

At school, I love learning math. Math is my favorite subject -- I hope to become a math teacher one day.
