A:
AQUARIUM
Melody gets to take her first friend to the
aquarium. This is the first time she is able to
relish in the benefits of having a friend. The
trip to the aquarium also reminds her of her
disabilities and how they will seemingly
always get in the way of having a real friend.

B:
BUTTERSCOTCH
Butterscotch is Melody's pet. He makes her
feel warm and welcomed immediately with
his effervescent presence. He sees past her
disability to the little girl that he loves and
cherishes. He takes on the role of protecting
her whenever possible, giving her the sense
of complete security.

C:
CATHERINE
Catherine is Melody's aide at school in the fifth
grade. They come to have this relationship that is
undeniably beneficial for Melody. They joke with
each other, appreciate and respect each other, and
support each other.

D:
DAD
What is there to say about dad... He is the
only man in the house (with the exception
of Butterscotch). His patience and
determination is under-emphasized but is
undoubtedly apparent. He carries Melody,
feeds her, changes her, and loves her
unconditionally.

E:
ELVIRA
Elvira changes meaning throughout the novel.
Melody's love surrounds Elvira in any form
though. The first allows Melody to see the
expression within herself and the following form
of Elvira lets her outwardly express herself. The
evolution becomes necessary and inspirational.

F:
FRIEND
Oh, how "normal" people take their friends
for granted. Melody would never take a
friend for granted, if she could get one.
The relationships in her life will have to
suffice as friendships even though they
may not approach the level that Melody
desires.

G:
GOOD MORNING AMERICA
Good Morning America is a nationwide
television program. The quiz team at
Spaulding Street Elementary School may have
the opportunity to be on The Good Morning
American Show if they win the competition,
and Melody does not want to miss out.

H:
H-5
Room H-5 is where Melody spent many
years of her education. The special
education room was different than the
other rooms. The teachers came and went,
some worthwhile, others not. It took the
school years to finally understand the
needs of Melody.

I:
INCLUSION
When Melody finally had the opportunity to
participate in the inclusion program at their
school, she was ecstatic. The chance to be
around normal kids with normal classes, even
if she did have to sit in the back by herself
most of the time.

J:
JILL
Jill is not an overpowering character in
the novel, but Jill's personal story helped
Melody to come to some realizations
about disabilities and their origin. She
realized that Jill might have once been
like Penny. This gives her both inspiration
and fear.

K:
KNOCK KNOCK
Melody is a funny little girl. She loves jokes.
Unfortunately, until she gets assistance, she is
unable to tell any jokes. A knock-knock joke is
one of the first things she uploaded into Elvira.

L:
I LOVE YOU
These are more words that average
people take for granted. When you can't
say these words, they become much
more important. Imagine not being able
to say I love you to the most important
people in your life... Melody feels this
every day, until things change.

M:
MOM
Or should I say, Super-Mom? Melody's
mom is her crutch, her advocate, and her
friend. She goes head to head with
teachers, peers, and doctors to support
Melody. Melody is inspired by her
strength; little does she know though, her
mom is inspired by her strength too.

N:
NORMAL
What is normal anyway? In the end,
doesn't Melody just have normal
problems, too?

O:
OLLIE
Ollie is a fish; he died. Melody empathized
with him because he was stuck in the fish
bowl... until one day he got sick of it, and
jumped right out. Melody wanted to be
the hero but something prevented her
from doing so.

P:
PENNY
Penny helps to put thing in perspective
for Melody; she is the light and the
darkness all wrapped up in one little
body. She represents hope, growth, and
love. She brings both turmoil and
happiness to Melody's life.

Q:
QUIZ TEAM
Melody decides she can join the quiz
team. She tries out and actually qualifies!
She is ecstatic to be part of a team, one
with normal kids. Maybe she can be on
Good Morning America after all.
