Wouldn't it be wonderful if the world spoke only one language, and everybody could understand each other without having to learn many languages and dialects? Well, no.
The problem with that is language is unique, and reflects upon different societies with different cultures, even when they speak the same language. How so?
GLOBAL ENGLISHES
What are global Englishes? To simply put it, Global Englishes refer to the various forms of English that are used around the world.

G'day!
Rise and Shine!

These varieties of English are different from each other in terms of pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and usage.

AHOY!
???
Some examples of Englishes include American English, British English, Indian English, Nigerian English, and Singaporean English, among many others

WHY DO PEOPLE USE AND LEARN ENGLISH?
In order to understand and simplify the reason English is learnt and spoken we divide it into categories. This is a little long so bear with me.

Firstly, Individuals who have grown up speaking English as their first language are using ENL (English as a Native Language).

Then there are individuals who are learning English as an additional language in an environment where English is the primary language of communication which is called ESL (English as a Second Language).
There are also individuals who are learning English in a non-English speaking environment where English is not the primary language of communication which is called EFL (English as a Foreign Language).
Lastly, the use of English as a common language of communication between speakers who do not share the same native language is called ELF (English as a Lingua Franca).

We can see that there are many reasons and areas for people to learn and use English nowadays. You will encounter and find out many other more as we go on.
HOW DID IT SPREAD?

We can say that there are 5 main reasons that explain how English spread so much. These are, British Colonialism, American Cultural Influence, Globalization, Technology, and English Language Teaching.

British colonialism: During the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, the British Empire was one of the largest and most powerful empires in the world. British colonialism led to the spread of English to many parts of the world, including India, Africa, and the Americas.

American cultural influence: The United States emerged as a major economic and cultural power in the 20th century, and American movies, music, and other forms of media have had a significant impact on the spread of English around the world.

Globalization: The rise of globalization and the interconnectedness of the world have increased the need for a common language of communication, and English has become the language of international business, diplomacy, and academia.
Technology: Advances in technology, such as the internet and social media, have facilitated the spread of English by making it easier for people to communicate with each other across borders and time zones. Remember ELF?

English language teaching: The growth of English language teaching around the world has also contributed to the spread of English. English is taught as a second or foreign language in many countries, and there are many English language schools and courses available for people who want to improve their English proficiency.
Three-Circle Model: This model was developed by Braj Kachru and divides the spread of English into three circles: Inner Circle, Outer Circle, and Expanding Circle. The Inner Circle are native English speakers. The Outer Circle refers to countries where English is used as a second language. The Expanding Circle refers to countries where English is taught as a foreign language.

Wow, those were a lot of words... As we can see, the descriptions highlight the complexity of the spread of English.
GLOBAL LANGUAGE
We have been talking about global Englishes, how they are so spread around the world, English as a Lingua Franca, yet what is a global language?

In a nutshell, a global language is a language that is spoken and understood by a large number of people around the world.
