calculated the circumference of the Earth with the Eratosthenes method

We found the right time when the Sun was at its highest position in Virovitica on March 20th.

A little after solar noon, at 12 o'clock, we went out to the school playground with a stick one meter long, placed it vertically on the ground and measured the length of the shadow of that stick.

We repeated the measurements five times.

We drew a right-angled triangle and calculated the angle of entry of the sun's rays using trigonometry.

We found the distance between our school in Virovitica and an imaginary school on the same meridian, but on the equator. It is 5119.38 km.

We calculated the circumference of the Earth O using proportionality.

Actual circumference of the Earth is
40 075 km, so our measurement error is 1820 km.
