This book is dedicated to Mrs. Hazel

The kids in Mrs. Hazel's Class were learning about the digestive system in class this week. One of the students was curious on the exact order and process, so she went home and put it to the test.

When Nyla got home from school she ate a piece of pizza and thought about the process of the digestive system as she was eating.

Nyla knows that food goes into the mouth where it is mechanically and chemically broken down. This means it is chewed then broken down by saliva that has enzymes which help to break down food.
After Nyla chewed her pizza, she swallowed it and it was sent to the stomach by an organ called the esophogus. This organ helps to push food into the stomach.

Nyla remembered how Mrs. Hazel said that the stomach muscles mix the food and liquid with digestive juices. After the food is broken down by the stomach enzymes, the stomach slowly empties its contents, called chyme, into your small intestine.
