Toby is a curious dog.   He likes to go 

outside and find all kinds of things and 

bring them home.   He is a boxer and lab mix, 

so he is full of energy.  

This past week, Toby has discovered Turtles!  

This is his fifth Box Turtle he found this 

week.

Toby finds Box Turtles under the wood 

piles in the back yard.   He barks and 

barks and digs his way under the pallets 

to get to the turtles.   When he catches a 

turtle, he does not eat it, but plays with 

the turtle by trying to bury it like a ball.

Eastern Box Turtles are found all 

througout New Jersey.   They have a hard 

shell to protect them from preditors.  

Their shell is unique and colorful.   The top 

part of the shell is called a Carapace.   The 

bottom of the shell is called a Plastron.  

They are able to close themselves into 

their shell to protect themselves from dogs 

like Toby!

Eastern Box Turtles are found in backyards, near 

streams, open woodlands and meadows.   When the 

weather is rainy, they like to stray a little further 

from their home and explore.   It is important that 

when you find an Eastern Box Turtle, you put them 

back near where you found them.   If they are 

placed far from their home, they may die trying to 

find their way back.
