Hercules is one of the greatest
mythological Greek heroes. His story is of a
man who was so strong and courageous,
whose deeds were so mighty, and who so
endured all the hardships that were given to
him. More stories were told about him than
any other hero.
When he was just a child, he already had
god-like strength. He grew up honing his skills
and utilizing them to satisfy his heroic need of
setting things right.
Zeus was the most powerful among the gods. His
hierarchy meant he could do whatever he pleased, but it also
meant that sometimes Zeus was not a very good husband to
his wife, Hera, the queen of the gods.
Hercules was a demigod, meaning he was half god, half
human. His father was Zeus and his mother was a beautiful
human princess.
Hera is not fond of Zeus' affairs and loathed
his relationship with Hercules. Once Hera
found out about Hercules' existence, she
immediately desired his death.
Hera
used her
goddess
powers to
put
Hercules in
debt with
King
Eurystheus.
Hercules must now complete 12 tasks
or labors for King Eurystheus to reclaim
his honor.
After Hercules completed his 10th labor,
King Eurystheus assigns him his 11th
task. Hercules must retrieve the
legendary golden apples of the
Hesperides at the far western corner of
the world.
The golden apples are under the
threatening watch of Ladon, a one-hundred
headed dragon, and the Hesperides, three
nymphs who are daughters of Titan Atlas.
Hercules
receives
information
that he will
need the aid
of Titan Atlas
in order to get
the apples.
The hero asks Atlas for help. Atlas is in a
bit of dilemma himself, as he has been
punished by Zeus to bear the whole world
on his shoulders literally.
