British rule placed taxes on the British colonies in North America. These included the Sugar Act of 1764, the Stamp Act of 1765, and the Townshend Acts of 1767.
Britain did not consult the colonists before taxing them. The colonists grew angry with Britain.
Colonists threw tea into the harbor in rebellion against British rule. This event is known at the Boston Tea Party, which occurred in 1773.
Battles of Lexington and Concord
The first shots of the American Revolution were fired on April 19, 1775.
The Battles at Lexington and Concord began the war.
Continental Army vs. British Army
The Colonists who fought in the Continental Army were called Patriots. George Washington led the Continental Army.
British soldiers fought in the British army. They were well trained and experienced soldiers, and were called Red Coats due to their Red Uniforms.
Some colonists agreed with the British. These were called Loyalists.
