Once upon a time, there were 2 friends named Sarah and Jack.

They loved to learn about science and explore the world around them.

One day, they decided to go on an adventure to the North Pole.
As they were walking on the ice, Sarah noticed something strange.
"Hey Jack, why is that piece of ice floating?"

I think it's because ice is less dense than water.
What does that mean?

Density is how much stuff is packed into a space, when there is less stuff in a space, it is less dense.

Ice is less dense than water, so it floats to the top. This means that the same amount of water takes up more space as a liquid than as a solid

But why does this happen?

There are three ways that heat can be transferred: conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction is when heat is transferred
through direct contact, like when you touch a hot stove.

Convection is when heat is transferred through the movement of fluids, like when you boil water on a stove.
