I have always been an animal person. From dogs, cats, hamsters, and even horses, I have taken care of many animals throughout my life.
Animals just make me feel happy in a special way. Although they cannot talk, I always felt a connection with each animal I have taken care of.
The thing is, I have never owned an animal of my own. I have pet sat but my parents would never let me keep one in my house.

Growing up, domestic animals were seen as dirty in my family and completely prohibited. I couldn't even mention the idea of a pet to my family as they would freak out.
This was not good for me because I loved animals and wanted nothing more than to have one of my own.
Pet sitting was and always will be my favorite way to make money. There is nothing better than sitting at home with these cute furry friends all day.
My 13th birthday was coming up, and I knew what the best birthday present ever would be. A pet!!
We're growing up. All you need to do is prove your responsibility to your parents and they'll get you one!
When I talked to my friends about it, they said...
I thought to myself, proving my responsibility is easy. But what is a small, low-maintenance animal that my parents wouldn't refuse to get me?
Then the idea hit me. A parakeet!
I knew a pet bird would be easy to take care of. Feeding it seeds, letting it fly around, and giving it some company was all that was needed for a happy and healthy bird
When I brought this idea up to my parents, they were not convinced. With school, chores, and my other activities, they did not think my bird would make it more than a few months.
My parents like to buy me things and take me places, but an animal did not seem to make the cut. I felt like it was a lost cause.
My friends had other things to say...
A bird??? Why not ask for a dog or a cat? All birds do is leave feathers and droppings everywhere.
