What is Networking?
Networking is the practice of transporting and exchanging data between nodes over a shared medium in an information system.
Types of Networking (Wireless)
There are 4 types of wireless networks, wireless local area networks, wireless metropolitan area networks, wireless personal area networks and wireless wide area networks, each with its own function.
Types of Networking (Wired)
Examples of wired networking are cable television, internet access, telephone networks, and fiber. These wired connections use coaxial cables, fiber optics, and twisted pairs which are designed for specific network technologies as the main communication media.
A network protocol is an established set of rules that determine how data is transmitted between different devices in the same network. Essentially, it allows connected devices to communicate with each other, regardless of any differences in their internal processes, structure or design.
What are Network Protocols?
Examples of Network Protocols:
There are many types of network protocols, here are some very popular/familiar network protocols:
SSH, SFTP, FTP, SCP, TELNET, SMTP, TCP/IP.
HTTP/HTTPS
Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is a protocol that secures communication and data transfer between a user's web browser and a website. HTTPS is the secure version of HTTP. The protocol protects users from data compromising websites.
Network Protocol: SSH
SSH or Secure Shell is a network communication protocol that enables two computers to communicate and share data. An inherent feature of ssh is that the communication between the two computers is encrypted meaning that it is suitable for use on insecure networks.
SSH is often used to "login" and perform operations on remote computers but it may also be used for transferring data.
Network Protocol: SFTP
Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) is a network protocol for securely accessing, transferring and managing large files and sensitive data. Designed by the Internet Engineering Task Force as an extension of Secure Shell (SSH), SFTP enables access, transfer and management of files over a network.
