We are not animals, though we eat food.
We are not plants, though we love it when it rains too.
We have spores instead of seeds, sometimes they travel through the air.
We are sometimes hidden as mycelium underground, but we are always there.
We are a type of “fruit” you could say, sometimes you eat us everyday!
Be careful though! We could also make you sick!
Some of us glow in the dark, make dye, or turn blue. What’s your favorite? Take your pick!
There’s one of us waiting for you!
Still haven’t guessed what we are? You will find out soon!
We are called: Mushrooms.
I hear the waves as they crash onto the shore,
a seagull caw followed by more.
I smell the salty, breezy air, the smell of kelp decaying everywhere.
I see a seal pup resting on the beach, a whale coming up to breach.
The feel of the cold ocean water on my finger,
the sticky touch of an anemone stinger.
The salty, crunchy, taste of kelp,
a sea otter eating an urchin answers the kelp's cry for help.
Tidepool
sunlight zone,
twilight zone,
midnight zone,
and abyss.
So many animals you just can't miss!
Water
Water, water, everywhere,
In a rainstorm falling on your hair.
In a lake, ocean, pond, or a cloud,
Everywhere you go, water must be allowed.
We need it to survive,
This is the object that has let us thrive.
Rain helps plants grow and grow,
We owe so much to H2O.
It creates waterfalls, rainbows, and much, much, more!
Water has so many surprises in store!
Quiet.
Hear the birds sing.
Wind blowing in the trees.
Light rain with sunshine and flowers.
It’s Spring!
Swimming, swimming, swimming, this salmon really is king,
When it comes to getting to our breeding ground, we won’t stop at a thing!
Jumping over waterfalls, dodging hungry bears,
Through smelling our way home, we know we're almost there!
But beware of all the fishermen,
And DON’T lose sight of that mother bear coming out of her den!
As we draw closer, we start to turn red,
Through all the troubles, we push on ahead.
Finally we arrive, but there’s no time to rest!
For I need to start building my nest!
I lay my eggs, and as for going downstream, I must go a step farther then to postpone.
For it is my eggs, not I, that shall make it home.
From Alaska to Tahoe, the salmon will run,
Depending on where you are, look for us in the Fall or under the Summer sun.
A Columbian Mammoth spots a lake and goes in for a drink,
Too late he realizes it is asphalt! But unlike the movies, he does not sink.
The more he struggles, the more he gets stuck,
Until he finally runs out of luck!
For a Saber Tooth Cat, a mammoth is a big and tasty meal,
So he jumps into the asphalt and is now into the whole ordeal.
Then the Dire Wolves come in, hungry for a treat,
They eat, but on their way out, the asphalt grabs their feet!
Eventually, thousands of years later, they get found!
By curious paleontologists, just digging in the asphaltic ground.
