Amelia Earhart
This story is about an American heroine named Amelia Earhart, who was one of Americas first celebrities! She showed courage in the face of danger and never backed down from a challenge. With her determination and daring personality, she became the best-known female flier.

Early Life
Amelia Mary Earhart was born on July 24, 1897 in Atchison, Kansas. Her parents were Amy Otis and Edwin Stanton Earhart. Two years later her sister Muriel, was born. Most of her childhood was spent living with her maternal grandparents while she attended school. She would spend summer's visiting and spending time with her parents in Kansas, city.

After seeing wounded soldiers returning from World War I, she decided to volunteer as a nurse's aide for the Red Cross. Earhart met many wounded pilots. She came to develop a strong admiration for aviators, and spent most of her free time watching the Royal Flying Corps practicing at the airfield nearby.

At a Long Beach air show in 1920, Earhart took a plane ride that transformed her life. Although it was only 10 minutes, as soon as the plane landed she knew she had to learn to fly. Flying became her main priority, and she would spend much of her time at the airfield.
Amelia had her first flying lesson with pilot Neta Snook. She worked many jobs to save money for her flight lessons. She worked as a truck driver, photographer, and stenographer. As she was able to save up money in between jobs, six months later she was able to purchase her first airplane, a yellow Kinner Airster biplane she named the Canary .
In 1923, she passed her pilot's test from the National Aeronautic Association and received her license two years later from the Fédération Aeronautique Internationale. She accomplished getting her license, all while flying in races and setting an unofficial altitude record for female pilots.
Amelia Earhart, pilot Wilmer Stultz, and co-pilot, Louis Gordon departed from Newfoundland in a seaplane, the Friendship. She then wrote a book based on the flight, which was then published. Amelia teamed up with publicist George Putnam to write it, and he quickly promoted her to celebrity status. Eventually, she went on a national book tour.

Earhart believed that everyone has the ability to take part in all types of careers regardless of gender. She was even known for encouraging women to reject social norms and to pursue various opportunities, especially in the field of aviation. In 1929, she helped fund the organization of female pilots that later became known as the Ninety-Nines.

In 1932, Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, in a nearly 15-hour voyage from Harbour Grace, Newfoundland to Culmore, Northern Ireland. This marked the beginning of the many solo trips that she would take later on.
