-Ruby Bridges

At such a young age Ruby Bridges had no idea the impact that she would have on the education system. She was a Civil Rights Activist at the age of six and continued her work throughout her adult years. This book explains in detail her young life and the trials and tribulations she faced as an African American girl going to an all-white public school in New Orleans, Louisiana.

My name is Ruby Bridges; I am six years old, This is how my story is told.
My mother and father, Lucille and Abon moved our family to New Orleans, Louisiana.

At this time, the schools in Louisiana were segregated, meaning white and black children were separately educated. But in 1960, because of the case Brown v. Board, five of my classmates and I moved to an all-white school we had no idea what we were moving toward.

My dad did not want me to attend William Frantz Public School out of fear, but my mother wanted me to persevere.
My attendance was finally accepted, and I was to go to school starting November fourteen; my family was my biggest support team!

As we walked up to the school, people started shouting, so loudly that we thought of rerouting.
Our destination was clear. We were to go in to that school no matter our fear.
We were escorted by federal marshalls hand in hand me, and mother, I thought, "now I understand."
These people did not want me here; they did not want me anywhere near.

I sat in the principal's office on my first day of school. That was by my own rule.
More and more people took their kids out of this school because they believed in separate education. Quickly, it started to diminish, the population.
Only when I met Mrs. Henry would I be in a classroom. I would study all alone in that room.
