Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin on February 12, 1809 in Kentucky. When he was 9, his mother died and he moved to Illinois with his father.
He became our 16th president in 1861.

Abraham Lincoln was the first president to wear a beard after an 11 year old girl wrote a letter to him suggesting that he should wear one.
Many people liked his beard and it became a signature part of his apperance.

The Civil War was a war between the North (anti-slavery) and the South (pro-slavery) that lasted from 1861 to 1865. The primary focus was slavery.
Abraham Lincoln was President during this time and led the war. President Lincoln opposed the expansion of slavery. He helped hold the Union (North) together and they eventually won the war.
is for Debate

There were a series of seven debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas.
The Lincoln-Douglas debates were about slavery. Douglas supported Popular sovereignty and Lincoln emphasized moral iniquity.

is for Emancipation Proclamation

The Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863 by Abraham Lincoln. It declared that all slaves in the rebellious states were to be freed. This was the first step in making slavery illegal.
is for Free Land

President Lincoln signed the Homestead Act on May 20, 1862. The Homestead Act provided 160 acres of land to anyone who would farm on the land. Any US citizen could file to recieve land!

is for Gettysburg Address

On November 19, 1863, President Lincoln gave a speech in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where one of the deadliest battles took place. This is one of his most famous speeches where he reminded the American people of equality.

is for Hat

Another famous feature of Abraham Lincoln was his stovepipe hat! Lincoln was already 6 feet tall and the hat added a couple of more inches. You can see his hat at the Smithsonean in Washington, D.C!

is for Inaguration

Abraham Lincoln's first inagural address was on March 4, 1861 at the Capitol.

is for John Wilkes Booth

A week after the Civil War ended on April 14th, President Lincoln and his wife were watching a play in Washington D.C when he was shot by John Wilkes Booth. President Lincoln died the next day on April 15, 1865, and was the first president to be assissinated.

is for Kentucky

President Lincoln was born in Kentucky in 1809 on February 12th. He is actually the first President to born outside of the original thirteen colonies.

is for Lawyer

Before Abraham Lincoln was President, he was a lawyer! He didn't attend law school, instead he taught himself. In 1836, he was admitted to the Illinois bar and practiced law there for 25 years until his Presidency.
This is where he earned the nickname "Honest Abe!"


is forMary Todd

President Lincoln and Mary Todd got married on November 4, 1842. Mary came from a wealthy family and was well educated. Together, they had 4 children!

is for National Bank


President Lincoln set up the National Bank system, which lead to the use of standard U.S currency!
He thought that paper money was unreliable and wanted people to have a safer way to store their money.
is for Opposed Slavery

Abraham Lincoln believed all men should be treated equal. He supported and worked with the abolitionists. One of his biggest accomplishments as president was passing the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed the slaves.

is for Politics

Abraham Lincoln was very young when he got involved with politics. After having many odd jobs, he was only 25 years old when he won a seat in Illinois Legislature!
