Introduction
‘Annie the Albino’ children’s literature, aims to shed light on albinism. Albinism is an inherited condition that leads to someone having very light skin, hair, and eyes. The book highlights how a little girl with albinism navigates through life with social and emotional challenges, discrimination, unwanted questions, bullying, and teasing. It also speaks about kindness, family, and friendship.

Annie, a vibrant and cheerful nine-year-old girl, has albinism. She is the only member of her family of six, who has noticeable unique features.

Her pale skin, ocean blue eyes, loose blond curls, and rosy red cheeks are what make her stand out to everyone.

Despite her unique features, she is as ordinary as can be. In her spare time, she can often be found in her mother’s flower garden with her cat, catching bugs and insects.

As a result of Annie not having enough melanin in her skin, she is likely to have serious sunburns after being in the garden for a short period of time.

The lack of melanin in her body does not only affect her skin but also her eyes. Which causes her to have poor vision.

Though Annie may be different from her family, she is not short of love, care, and affection.

Annie attends Wilder Preparatory School. Though she is a vibrant and cheerful girl, her school experiences are not always bright.

Her unique appearance would normally cause her to be teased and laughed at by the unkind students around her.

For the most part, some of her classmates were curious as to how she was white but both of her parents are brown.

Her one and only friend Jane, would cheer her up with sweet treats every now and then when she felt like she had no one.
