Once upon a time, there lived a little orange fishie 

named, Kara. Kara lived at the bottom of the ocean 

with her parents, Momma Fish and Poppa Fish.

Life at the bottom of the ocean was simple. They 

woke up in the morning, ate their breakfast, 

brushed their teeth, went to school, did their 

homework, played a little bit, and then ate dinner 

and went to bed. 

It was a fine life, but something was off with Kara. 

Kara sat in class day dreaming as all the other 

fishies listened attentively.

This day dreaming started to affect her Language Arts grade as she

 slowly fell behind....

Kara's parents were concerned.

Kara's parents had a meeting with the teacher to 

devise a plan for Kara!

Day after day, night after night, hours upon hours, 

Kara's Poppa worked with her on sounding out words, 

working on vowels, to help her become a better 

reader. 

Kara and her dad read them all:

- Bernstein Bears

- Franklin

- Clifford

- Curious George

- Jillian Jigs

- Paper Bag Princess

If it was a children's book... Kara read it.

Kara finally found a series that she absolutely 

loved, Mr. Mugs.

As they read, Kara's dad would write the words 

that Kara stumbled on, on cue cards. 

By the end of a book, she usually had a stack of 

cue cards to review....

When Kara was finally able to read all the words on 

the cue cards with ease... her dad put her to the 

test!

He would combine all the words into a "Word Mad 

Minute!" She would have to say all the words on 

the sheet in under a minute!
