With the arrival and departure of merchants it was chosen by John of Aviz Philippa of Lancaster for the birth of one of his most illustrious sons, Infante D. Henrique, better known as ''the Navigator'', who played a decisive role in the Age of Discoveries. The first impulse and his great encouragement to contribute to subsequent navigations are due to him.



In 1498, the navigator Vasco da Gama and his fleet headed to India by sea. This discovery allowed direct access to spices and luxury products from the East. To commemorate this feat, D. Manuel ordered the best architects to be recruited to build the famous Belém Tower in Lisbon. Trade by sea made it possible to increase the quantity of cargo, reduce time and multiply profits.



On 21ˢᵗ August 1415, in these walls lived more than 20,000 merchants dedicated to trade of spices, fabrics, oriental carpets, precious stones and others...
Gold, cereals and luxury products arrived there. It was a land of Muslims, which made it possible to conquer territories for Christianity.
