desert for hours until he stumbled
upon a beach. As he walked towards
the water, he saw a giant thermometer
sticking out of the sand. He read the
temperature and it was 100 degrees!
He noticed that this was due to the
time of day and the hot sun.

noticed how hot his feet were getting. He
then came up with an idea. He was about
to use the scientific method, something
his pirate teacher taught him. He came up
with a hypothesis. He said, "I believe the
sand on the beach can change temperatures.
Sand in the sun should be hotter than sand
under the shade." He then took sand and poured
it through a funnel. After the sand passed the
funnel, it then fell into a cylinder. Buckeye
wanted exact measurements. The sand in the
cylinders were then put into two separate bags and
then one bag was placed under a big palm tree, while
the other was put out in the sun.

variables Buckeye then wrote down some data. He
took out some paper and his colored pencils and
charted his information from his experiment
and made a great discovery. He found his
hypothesis turned out to be correct. Sand is hotter
when laid out in the sun and sand is cooler when
under the shade. This turned out to be his theory
from his conclusions from the experiment. Buckeye
was so amazed from his experiment that he felt, he
could apply this type of thinking to many other
questions in life. He can make more inferences and
collect data which could include charting mass and
volume. There was no limit to his adventure of
experimentation.

took his curiosity to new heights. He
did experiments wherever he went and
became a world known figure in the
science community. He was known as
Buckeye the scientific pirate!
