It was in the end of summer before fall. Sometimes
I would like to sit and remember Doodle, the one
crazy brother I had. When he was born I was six
years old and was born with a disability. Everyone
thought he was going to die so my dad build him a
coffin. I changed his name from William Armstrong
to Doodle

In the beginning I didn't like my brother, but one day
he smiled at me. My dad build him a go-cart and I had
to pull him around. I took him to my favorite place to
go, Old Women Swamp. He really loved and said it
was so pretty. One time I showed him his coffin. but
he said "It's not mine." Then I made him touch it.

When Doodle was five years old I started teaching him
how to walk. He kept on failing for a long time, finally
he learned. One day at breakfast I brought Doodle to
the door walking. Everyone was so surprised and
mama cried. Then Doodle never used the go-cart. I
got confident after that and planned to teach how to
run, swim, climb trees, and fight.

School was about to begin and wanted Doodle to learn
to do most activities. I taught him how to swim but he
wasn't making progress, so we doubled our efforts. I
almost admitted defeat. Doodle got sick with a fever
and started having nightmares.

One Saturday afternoon we heard a strange sound a
great big red bird fluttering and it fell on the ground
dead. It was a Scarlet Ibis that it traveled a long way
and died in our yard. Aunt Nicey said dead birds are bad
luck.

Doodle and I went to Horsehead Landing to canoe.
Doodle was not feeling well and said he was too tired,
so I made him row back against the tide. Then black
clouds were gathering and a storm started brewing.

The storm was growing and the thunder started roaring.
It was getting dark and Doodle was both tired and
scared. We started running home when a lightning
struck a tree and was falling. I saw it coming and
pushed Doodle to the side while the tree fell on my right
leg and I fainted.

I awoke the next day, in shock. I later found out that I
was in the hospital. I looked around and found mama
right next to me. i asked her what happened and she
told that I was knocked out and they brought me to the
hospital. My leg was destroyed and the doctor told me i
had to have a cast on for about half a year.

I asked where everyone else was and she told me they
were at home waiting. After my last surgery, we went
home and met dad and aunt Nicey. I was dying to
know where Doodle was but when I asked my mom she
said first eat your lunch. But I was persistent I kept
asking and I wasn't finding out.
