The story is based on the economic crisis in Taiwan during the 1990s when Taiwan was one of the top-profit countries with labor and many other factories, though when China started entering the game pulling most of the job opportunity that was provided to many Taiwanese. The economy dropped immediately after big companies left for higher profit while having less payment for labor. On the other hand, it is also based on my family’s story of why we immigrated to the States after the crisis.

There is a little kid named Kevin, a Taiwanese Middle schooler enjoying his childhood time just like everyone else, who does not know what is going to happen with his family.
Kevin: Dad? You look a bit sad, why is that?
Kevin’s Dad: Nothing son, everything is alright.

As time went on everything was not fine, during the 1990s Taiwan’s economy dramatically dropped causing people to lose job opportunities, losing homes, and some people lived without a roof over their heads. Like Kevin’s family, his parents struggled to make a living during that period, not having enough food resources to feed every member and paying for education for Kevin.

Kevin: Dad? Mom? Why am I not going to school anymore? And why have I been seeing more people live on the streets? I really don’t like what’s happening…
Dad: Kevin, there is nothing to worry about. Just focus on yourself and go to school, okay?
Mom: We just can’t give you an answer about what is going on, Kevin. We’re sorry.
Kevin: Fine.

After China took over big companies, Taiwan is facing the need for immediate change for it to be still competitive with other countries. Meanwhile, Kevin’s mom heard one of her friends mention the opportunity the U.S. provides to manual laborers since the relationship between China and Taiwan was not as friendly as it seemed to be after the war. Although the hardship that it can bring upon the family can be crucial with the language barrier, they still decided to sell everything they had and take the risk of immigrating.

Kevin’s mom: What if we all moved out and emigrated to the States? They provide more opportunities there. Even if we don’t fully understand the language, it is much better than sitting here doing nothing.
Kevin’s Dad: Might as well, because we won’t be getting anything good with how tense China and Taiwan’s relationship is right now. But what if we lose everything after moving?
Kevin’s Mom: But we are on the edge of losing everything with fewer job opportunities already, and we can barely purchase food with how expensive everything is right now.
Kevin’s: Okay then, why not.

After successfully immigrating into the State, everything turns 180 degrees from food, and different ethnicities, to how they are treated. Having a limited amount of money for them to survive under racial profiling, while having the pressure of white purity and differential treatment received by Asians for being a minor minority.
