Their names were Aaltje Vissia and Johannes Jellema and they were in love.

had been childhood friends their whole lives.

"We shall marry you to Petre Woodhumphlgotten!" Aaltje
and Johannes were devastated because they wanted to be
married.

and go to America so they could marry
each other and not be restricted by Aaltje's
father's wishes.

They brought with them all the money they had saved, provisions,
so they wouldn't go hungry on the boat, and clothes. Each also
brought one personal item.

They left in secret and tried to clothe
themselves like Americans to fit in. When they
got to the port, they had to wait several days
before allowed on the boat to get their health
inspected.

They got on a boat and began sailing away.
Aaltje and Johannes missed their family. Aaltje
missed her little sister the most.

There were a lot of people on the ship. It was
crowded, smelly, and many people got sea sick.

When they got to America, they had to wait a
while til they could pass all their tests to get
into America. The Immigration Act of 1891 had
just been passed and only people that could
take care of themselves, and were healthy
could come into the United States.

Johannes began to look for a good
area to live.

Aaltje and Johannes wanted inexpensive land,
so they decided instead of settling in a large
city like most immigrants, they were going to
build a farm out in Georgia.

It was very hot on the farm, and their neighbors were
wary of them at first. Even though Aaltje and Johannes
spoke English well, they could barely understand their
neighbors because of their rich Southern accents.
Because of this, they did not talk much.

When they went into town to buy food, people
didn't say hello or exchange pleasantries; it
was as if Aaltje and Johannes were invisible.

who showed up was the pastor.
