Fred the flying squirrel was born into a community of flying squirrels. His mom raised him well and he grew up to have lots of friends. Flying squirrels were always running or flying around using a ton of energy causing diseases or illnesses. Conserving energy is the main reason flying squirrels live in a community. But when Fred and his brothers were born, his family had to move to a different nest.

When Fred was a young little boy there was a flood. It was just a small river overflow but it affected his life greatly. His whole family had to move to a different tree. They were not use to this new part of the forest because there was not a lot of nuts or fungi to eat, and the insects were different over here. Fred now lived his life in fear because of the flood and realized how much the flood affected the ecosystem.
The flood that occurred when Fred was young.
3
As Fred grew up he realized how much the flood really did, because almost all Fred's friends had lost a family member due do the flood. The flood actually made an area where fungi was very plentiful though. There were also a lot of insects due to all the abundance of green.

One day Fred the flying squirrel was sitting in his hole in a tree in Nuuksio National Park. This is Fred's comfortable place or position in the environment, also known as his niche. Obviously the park managers have done a good job to make Fred and his friends feel safe considering the population of flying squirrels in this park. Fred and his friends really like the mixed coniferous forests, and are fine with being a little farther down in the food chain.

Fred and his friends
Although they are down in the food chain Fred feels safe and has made many friends in this park thanks to the park's promise to protect them. They also have lots of resources to eat in the park. Fred hides from owls in holes created by woodpeckers. The owl is the main predator that Fred and his friends do not like. The owls maintain their population with all the smaller mammals have to eat. It is important that the flying squirrels and the owls maintain a stable population because if they didn't it would affect a lot of other animals including the fox, little insects, pine marten, and hawks.
6
Fred feels safe in his park only because humans are the biggest limiting factor for flying squirrels. Inside the park though Fred has to avoid Pine Marten, owls, and hawks. This usually isn't that big of a deal because of his ability to glide from tree to tree. Due to the great amount of flying squirrels sometimes these predators can get ahold of some of Fred's friends, but Fred realizes it's apart of life.
