Lyle's flying foxes belong to the family pteropodidae. They are found in the rain forests of Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam. The closest living relative of the flying fox is the family Cynocephalidae, a small family which includes colugos or flying lemurs. It has been proven that flying foxes have evolved independently from early mammalian ancestors in such a way that they are closely related to primates.
Flying foxes are frugivorous which means that they eat fruit. If you're wondering how they find fruit, since other bats us echolocation to find food, they don't they actually have better eye site than other bats. Lyle's flying foxes roost in tall trees. Like other bats they feed at night, but the roosting colones can be quite active during the day, when the females are feeding the young and the males foraging for food they can fly 31 miles between roosting sites.
Adult flying foxes can measure up to 16 inches from head to toe. Believe it or not they have a thumb, which helps them move on branches. Although most mammals have tails, flying foxes do not. They have no need for extra balance. They can weigh up to 90-140g when born and 600-1100g when adult, and can live up to 15-30 years.
Flying foxes are one of the biggest bats in the world, with a wingspan of up to 2 meters, and they have 34 teeth compared to the 32 teeth of an adult human mouth.
