This story is dedicated to all the neighbors who work together to strengthen our community and make it a better place for everyone.

The Garden of Giving
Illustrated by: Megan Holman

My name is Jo, and this is my brother Jax. We aspire to support our neighbors by creating a community garden filled with fresh produce for everyone to enjoy.

To understand the preferences of our neighbors, we will ask each of them about their favorite fresh garden produce. We will compile a list of their favorites and plant those specifically for them.

Once we plant the garden, we can take care of the plants and see them grow. This is like the friendships we are making with our neighbors.

Every morning, we wake up excited to check our garden. It makes us happy to know we're helping our neighbors. Soon, we'll be able to brighten their day with fresh goodies from our garden!

Growing a garden can take anywhere from 30 to 60 days, depending on what we plant. It requires a lot of patience and hard work. When we share the fruits and vegetables from our garden with our neighbors, we're not just giving them a basket of goodies. We're also sharing the time and energy we put into growing those plants. It's a special gift that shows how much we care!

Helping others should always feel special and not like a job you have to do. It's important because when you help, you also take care of yourself, which makes you stronger inside and out. Just like a garden that needs love and attention to grow, your kindness can help everyone around you feel happy and cared for. When you share your kindness, it brings joy to your heart and the hearts of others!

Gardens need plenty of rain to grow strong and healthy. If we don’t get enough rain, we can help by watering the garden a little bit every day. This way, our plants will stay happy and continue to grow well!

A garden is like a beautiful reminder of life and friendship. Every plant in the garden has a special role and helps feed everyone nearby. When a brother and sister work together to care for the garden, they do more than just water the plants; they show love and kindness to their neighbors. Being a good person takes effort and hard work. It's important to be generous and always ready to lend a hand to others.

Our neighbors are special people in our lives, and we need to take care of each other. Let’s look out for one another!

Today is the day we begin harvesting the garden, Jax!
