Chapter 1: Adventure Awaits!
Ernest Shackleton was born in Ireland in 1874. He was the oldest son, and came from a family of 10! Ernest was very interested with adventure. His younger sisters became his first
fans ever. They were very fascinated with their
brother. He read books that made him even more
fascinated about explorations. At the age of 16,
Ernest left his home for the first of many
journeys at sea. He earned a small Wage in the
mercantile marine. Facing the complicated rigging of
his first ship, a large vessel called Hoghton Tower,
a young Ernest literally set himself to "learning the
ropes." After his first voyage,

Ernest signed a paper that said he was totally committed to spend the next four years working at sea in the mercantile marine. In 1898, age 24, Ernest had passed an examination for master, which meant he had the qualifications and authority to command a ship of his own should the opportunity arise. He saw much of the world from the deck of a ship, and it was only a matter of time before the greatest and
most mysterious continent of the world
reached his ears. Antarctica was truly the
last great frontier; only recently discovered,
and almost entirely unexplored, the continent
presented the ultimate challenge for the brave
of heart.

Chapter 2: Expedition, Start!
Ernest Shackleton prepared for his Antarctic expedition of 1914. He was known as one of the United Kingdom's greatest explorers. He and his men climbed mount Erebus, which is a 13,000 foot volcano off the Antarctic coast. For this accomplishment, he was knighted by The King of England which earned him the title of Sir . Even though Ernest
had gotten so close to Antarctica, he still
thought that it wasn't enough. He wanted to
cross the entirety of Antarctica. Ernest
was stuck with this idea. To accomplish
this, he had to get help.
The famous Titanic sunk 2 years before Shackleton's ship set sail.
Ernest hired 26 people out of thousands just for this expedition. Ernest got another person to join his crew when they were half way to the Antarctic. This man was a stowaway. Ernest brought lots of sled dogs to use for storage. They would carry food and other supplies for Ernest and
his men. Ernest's ship was named
Endurance. After the expedition had
started, Ernest began seeing packed ice
floating around. He got very concerned
because only 2 years before his
great expedition, the Titanic had sank due to
a large iceberg.

Chapter 3: The Ice of the Antarctic
After about a month at sea, there was a huge snowstorm in mid July. This snowstorm made the ice around them thicker and harder to get going, nonetheless, Ernest and his crew had to wait for the ice to melt. A month had passed and
the ice still hadn't melted, it had actually gotten
even harder and began slowly tightening around
them! Strange noises began to come from the
depths of the ship, as the wood decks of the
ship began to bend upward due to the tension
that was coming from the bottom of the ship.
The men were in constant danger and had to be extremely

careful. It was difficult for the men to maintain a normal routine. The Endurance was built to withstand the Antarctic sea but no ship could be powerful enough to withstand ice floes. The ice seemed that it would battle them and their ship till the end. Spring had come and Ernest told his crew to pack up for sailing. Ernest was not a naive man, and was very aware that hi ship stood little chance to remain seaworthy. But Ernest was a man who was aware of the value of hope and the crucial importance of containing good morale and high spirits among his men. The ship slowly began to collapse under their feet. Ernest knew that he had no hope of
leading his men to safety.
What the ice flow could have looked like.
