FONIAS GORGE
--------------------------
A landscape of outstanding natural beauty
Samothrace, Greece

The imposing gorge of Fonias is located in the northeastern part of the island of Samothrace. The gorge has an area of about 2. 600 acres and crossed by the Fonia River. At the mouth of the river, a watchtower of the same name has been standing since the Gateluzzi era (1. 430 AD).

The altitudinal deviations in the gorge are remarkable, from 500 metres to sea level. During the flow of the Fonia River, waterfalls and small granite lakes (known as vathres) are formed. In the largest waterfall, Klidosis, the water falls from a height of 35 metres.

The landscape around the river, in the gorge, is beautiful with rich flora and fauna. The vegetation consists mainly of plane trees and dense ferns. There are also other species such as cedars, strawberries and herbs. In the higher areas of the canyon there is a unique, toxic and medicinal plant, the holly (Taxus baccata).
