WAR BACKGROUND
Alright, let’s talk about the Vietnam War. So, a long time ago, Vietnam used to be ruled by France, like how a big brother might sometimes boss around their little brother. But then, after a long of fighting and negotiations, something called the Geneva Accords happened in 1954. It was like a big agreement where everyone agreed to split Vietnam into two parts, kind of like how you might share a pizza.
One part was in the north, and the other was in the south, But, things didn’t say peaceful for long, and disagreements between the North and South Vietnam led to a big war, with countries like the United States getting involved. And that’s how the Vietnam war started, all because of those disagreements after the Geneva Accords.
US INVOLVEMENT
So, imagine the United States as a big superhero. In the 1960s Vietnam was having some trouble between its North and South parts. The United States decided to help South Vietnam, like a friend helping another friend in trouble. In 1964, something called the Gulf of Tonkin incident happened. It was like a big misunderstanding in the ocean, where people thought there was an attack on U.S ships by North Vietnam. Because of this, the U.S got more involved in the war, sending soldiers and equipment to help South Vietnam. So, that’s how the United States got involved in the Vietnam War, trying to help out a friend in need after the Gulf of Tonkin incident.

FIGHTING TACTICS
Guerrilla Warfare: This is like sneaky surprise attack, The Vietnamese soldiers, especially from the North, were experts at this. Instead of big battles, they would sneak up on the American soldiers, attack quickly, and then disappear into the jungle. It was like playing tag, but the rules were always changing.

Tunnel Systems: Imagine a secret underground clubhouse, but for soldiers! The vietnameses soldiers built these tunnels all over the place, like a maze. They used them to hide, store supplies, and even move around without being seen. It was like having a secret hideout where you could pop up anywhere!.
Bobby Traps: Think of a surprise present, but not a good one! The Vietnamese soldiers set up traps all over the jungle. They were like Puzzles or tricks, designed to catch the American soldiers off guard. Sometimes they were hidden in the ground, in trees, or even in everyday objects. It was like playing a game where you had to be super careful with every step you took.

KEY BATTLES
Battle of Dien Bien Phu:
This was like a showdown between the Vietnamese soldiers and the French. It happened in 1954, before The United States got heavily involved. The Vietnamese soldiers, led by General Vo Nguyen Giap, surrounded and attacked a French military base called Dien Bien Phu. They used clever tactics, like digging trenches and setting up artillery, to defeat the much stronger French army. It was a major turning point that eventually led to the Geneva Accords and the division of Vietnam
Battle of la Drang:
This battle happened in 1965 and was one of the first major fights between the United States and North Vietnamese forces. It was like a big clash in the jungle, with both sides fighting hard. The American soldiers used helicopters to move quickly and bring in reinforcements, while the North Vietnamese soldiers used guerrilla tactics and fought fiercely. It was a tough battle with lots of casualties on both sides, but it showed how difficult the war would be for the Americans.
TET OFFENSIVE:
in 1968, during the Vietnamese New Year celebration called Tet, the North Vietnamese soldiers launched a surprise attack all across South Vietnam. It was like a big surprise party, but not a happy one! They attacked cities, military bases, and even the U.S embassy in Saigon. The Americans and South Vietnamese soldiers fought back hard, but it showed that the North Vietnamese still had a lot of fight left in them. The Tet Offensive changed how many people thought about the war and led to more protest back home in the United State
Key people involved in the war
Ho Chin Minh:
He was like the leader of the people who wanted Vietnam to be communist. He wanted his country to be independent and free from foreign influence.

Lyndon B. Johnson:
He was the president of the United States at the time. He and many people in the United States supported the other group, which wanted Vietnam to be democratic. The United States sent soldiers and helped fight the war.
Ngo Dinh Diem:
He was like the leader of South Vietnam, which was the group that wanted Vietnam to be democratic. But his government had problems and there was a lot of fighting and confusion in Vietnam.
