A is for Anthem
Florida's Anthem is named "Florida, Where the Sawgrass Meets the Sky"
written by Jan Hinton, a music teacher. This anthem got its name
because sawgrass grows in Florida's coastal marshes and is common in
the Everglades, where it grows as far as the eye can see.


B is for Bird
Florida's bird is the mockingbird. Mockingbirds are about
ten inches long, with a fifteen-inch wingspan, gray upper
portions, white undersides, and white patches on the tail
and wings.


C is for Capital
The capital of Florida is Tallahassee. It is the 125th largest city
in the United States. Tallahassee became the capital of Florida,
in 1824.


D is for Dolphin
Dolphins are saltwater mammals and they have no sense of
smell, but they have good hearing and know different sounds
like barks, clicks, and whistles. They also have keen eyesight.


E is for Everglades
This Everglades has been around for 5,000 years. It used to
reach from the Orlando to Florida Bay. It was a big wilderness
of wetlands containing sawgrass marshes, freshwater sloughs,
and swamps. The Everglades is home to more than 67
endangered animals.


F is for flag
The Florida state flag represents the land of sunshine, flowers,
palm trees, rivers and lakes.


G is for Gem
This gem is called the moonstone, it is in memory of
astronauts landing on the moon in 1969. The moonstone is a
form of the mineral feldspar, but is not found naturally in
Florida.


H is for Horse Conch
The horse conch is a shell. It has been Florida's state shell
since 1969. This shell can grow up to twenty-four inches.
Young horse conchs are orange-colored shells.

I is for Island
Marco Island is located in a city in Florida, it is the number 1
island in the United States and number 4 island in the World
for 2014.




J is for Juice
Orange juice is juice from oranges. It is made by squeezing
the fresh oranges. Orange juice is fresh, healthy, delicious,
and sweet. Orange juice is Florida's beverage.



K is for Key West
Key West is an island in Florida, and is 90 miles away from
Cuba. Key West has a tropical climate, which means that it
has a wet and dry climate.

L is for Location
Florida is located southeastern of the United States. Florida
borders with the state of Alabama and Georgia. Florida is close
to the Atlantic Ocean.

M is for Motto
"In God We Trust" was part of the state seal in 1868. This is
also the motto of the United States and is also on Florida's first
state motto, "In God is our Trust." In 2006, "In God We Trust"
was Florida's motto.

N is for Nickname
Florida has a nickname and its nickname is The Sunshine
State. This nickname was adopted long time ago in 1970. It is
called The Sunshine State because of its tropical climate.



O is for Orange Blossom
The orange blossom is Florida's flower. The orange blossom is
one of the most fragrant flowers in Florida. Orange blossoms
have 5 petals and sepals. The petals on the orange blossom
are curved and thick.

P is for Population
Population is the amount of people living in a country, state,
or city. There were 18.8 million people living in Florida in
2010. Florida is the most populous state in the Southeastern
United States.



Q is for Quarter
This quarter has a Spanish galleon or sailing ship, the Space
Shuttle, and palm trees. This coin was designed by Ralph
Butler. The Spanish galleon represents Florida's discovery.


R is for Reptile
Florida's reptile is the American Alligator. Alligators eat fish,
turtles, and other animals. Alligators grow about eight inches
long. Older alligators grow from six to twelve feet. Alligators
should not be fed, since this causes them to lose their fear of
humans, and feeding is against Florida laws.
