Mateo and Caleb lived in a small village in the most southern portion of their continent, Goldinian. Goldinian was once a booming continent, with many towns, cities, and an abundance of magic.

For many years, those who lived in Goldinian were very happy. The land was rich with resources such as water, nutrient-rich soil for farming, and many native species of animals. Many of the humans who resided in Goldinian had magical powers. Some could control the elements, such as fire, water, earth and wind. Others had abilities such as super strength and speed. The towns people lived in peace with the animals, and through the magic which coursed throughout the lands, the humans and animals could communicate with one another.
But one terrible day this all changed. An evil witch placed a curse over Goldinian, and stole all of the magic right out of the land. She trapped the magic within a chest, which could only be opened with the magical key she wore around her neck. It sat upon the top of a volcano and was guarded by werewolves. Goldinian was left in chaos, as the towns people could no longer access their magic, nor communicate with the animals. Most fled to the south, which was as far away from that dreaded volcano as one could get.

Mateo and Caleb were brothers, and they had lived in Goldinian their entire lives. They both had dark brown hair, big brown eyes, and tan skin. They had strength and speed which set them apart from the average person. Mateo had the ability to control earth. He could make plants grow, control the ground beneath ones feet, and move rocks with just a thought. Caleb had the elemental power of controlling the air. He could summon winds, create fog, and cover up scents by channeling his wind.
When the witch had cast her spell one year before, the boys were playing a game of hide and seek with their best friend Oro the cheetah. They had just been found by Oro, and the three were standing beneath an enchanted tree. When the blast from the spell had spread across the land, the tree had protected the three friends. They remained in control of their powers, and still had the ability to communicate with Oro, which meant only one thing. It was up to the trio to save Goldininan.

So the three friends began on the journey to the mountain. They traveled quickly, the boys using their super speed, and Oro using his natural cheetah abilities. They went past the powerful river which separated the north from the south, and shouted farewell to the local merman.
